Naeemul Haque, one of the senior-most members of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and a close aide to Prime Minister Imran Khan, passed away at the age of 70 in Karachi on Saturday.
Haque, who was also the special assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on political affairs, had been suffering from blood cancer since 2018.
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry was the first to break the news of Haque’s demise on Twitter. Family sources said Haque was under treatment at a Karachi hospital.
Prime Minister Imran expressed deep grief over Haque’s passing. “[I] am devastated by one of my oldest friend Naeem’s passing. He was one of the 10 founding members of PTI and by far the most loyal,” he wrote on his official Twitter handle. “In 23 years of PTI’s trials and tribulations, he stood by me. He was always there for support whenever we were at our lowest ebb,” he said.
The prime minister said he saw Haque battling with cancer with courage and optimism over the last two years. “Till the very end he was involved in the party affairs and attended cabinet meetings as long as he was able. His passing has left an irreplaceable void,” he said in another tweet.
The ruling party paid homage to the seasoned politician, calling him a dedicated Pakistani, a loyal friend and a kind human being. “The entire PTI family is aggrieved upon Naeemul Haque’s sad demise. May Allah bless his soul in the highest ranks of Jannah,” it wrote on party’s official Twitter handle.
Born on July 11, 1949, in Karachi, Haque completed his MA in English Literature from University of Karachi (1970) and then pursued an LLB from Sindh Muslim Law College Karachi (1971). In 1996, he became one of the five founding members of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) along with his close friend Imran Khan. As a trusted aide, he helped Imran Khan manage the party affairs and overcome the election setbacks of 1997 and 2001. After the death of his wife in 2008 from a bout of cancer, Naeem fully devoted his life to PTI, where he become the central information secretary and president of Sindh chapter. Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari said it was difficult to imagine PTI without Haque. “In Naeem’s passing I have lost a unique friend. His humour, his political support for me in PTI, his passion for music, his temper – and his fight against cancer till the end – all was so “Naeem”! Can’t imagine PTI without Naeem frankly! So many wonderful memories come flooding,” she tweeted.
PML-N President and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif also offer condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the depart soul. “Very sad to hear about the passing away of Naeem-ul-Haq.
